Wrap Up

Thanks very much for giving me the chance to participate in this training. There is no way I would have been aware that these sites and applications existed let alone have the opportunity to try them out.
I hope to be able to keep them fresh in my mind, and consider how they can be best used in a library setting.
Cheers

Social Networking

I do agree that libraries need to have a presence on social networking site such as Facebook. Especially as a way of staying in touch with their younger clients.

Online Applications

I, like many others no doubt, had no idea that these facilities existed. It's very handy to know of their existence

Mashups

My creation

I really enjoyed having a look at the variety of mashups and found it easy to create my little calendar, upload it to flikr and then save it on my blog. I must be learning something! I'm sure these could be used to create fancy and interesting images and tools for promotion of the library.

PodCasts

Now I know what podcasts are! There seem to be many applications for them in a library environment. The Grand Rapids Public Library has used them for guest speaker and author talks, book reviews from librarians and storytime sessions. They could also be used for oral history interviews, staff training etc.
Does the NSW State Library podcast some of their seminars? Us people who live in the country can then hear/watch them without actually having to go to Sydney.

Answer Boards and Social Searching

I've just had a quick look at the range of questions on Yahoo7 answers. There are some I would dearly love to answer ( Do you think I should wear black leggings? for example) but not necessarily in my role as library staff.
I like the idea of "slamming the boards" and making the presence of librarians known and respected in the wider web world (try saying that quickly).
However I also feel we have an obligation to our local community and there is the time factor to take into consideration. I find that it can sometimes be a struggle to meet the deadlines for the information requests submitted by our own customers.
Maybe I can outsource our own requests, post them on to Answers or WikiAnswers, and another librarian will provide the answer for me. Hmmm worth considering.

Del.icio.us

I have just created a del.icio.us account. So far I've only added a couple of favorite bookmarks and subscribed to a tag. Using this is a lot of fun. I think there are more fancy ways of adding del.icio.us to my blog, but I'm just going to add the link for now.

NO COOKIES IN THE LIBRARY

HOW TO DEAL WITH DIFFICULT LIBRARY CUSTOMERS

You Tube

I have just looked at a number of different You Tube and Google video examples, and have spent far too much time just fiddling around. I liked the advertisement for the Library Opening Late Night, as it was very professional. I can undersand that this is an effective way of advertising upcoming events in the library, or promoting different parts of the service.

Wikis

I enjoyed having a look at some of the Wiki's listed, especially the Book Lover Wiki, because I really enjoy reading book reviews. I was interested to read the article "What to do with Wikipedia". The author of this suggested that Wikipedia is here to stay, and that academics need to acknowledge and recognise this.

I, like many other use Wikipedia as a quick reference tool, however I have also worried about the accuracy of its content, and would be reluctant to use it as the only source.

Adding information to the Learning 2.0 Wiki was easy.

RSS Feeds

I have added my RSS feeds on to Bloglines. It took me a while to work out how to do this, but then again it is Friday afternoon. I can see the advantages of streamlining specific information needs into one spot.
I tried to add an RSS feed on to this blog, howver each time it came up with an invalid URL message. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong.

I like this photo of a fellow in Vietnam having a bit of down time. My husband took it a few years ago on a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam.

This is the last dog image I'm adding to this blog, My work colleagues are starting to look bemused as I'm not generally a "pink and puppy" kind of person.

However I cannot resist the temptation to add my pup "Macca" Mr Charm personified, or is that dogified.

I found these very cute photographs of windswept schnauzers on Flickr. We own an equally cute miniature schnauzer, who usually looks a little more well groomed that this!!

It took a bit of time to work out how to get these pictures on to my blog.

For my next trick I hope to be able to add some of my own "cute doggie" photos

Technology Confessions

Out the very outset I will have to admit that although I like the idea of new and changing technology I don't always embrace it with enthusiasim in practice. Many years ago I bought a CD that was hard to come by. I asked a friend of mine to tape it for me. When she gave me the CD back I told her to keep it, as there was no liklihood of me ever owning a CD player ( I didn't say "one of those darn newfangled contraptions" but I might as well have.) I dislike mobile phones and don't really understand what Bluetooth is.
However, in this rapidly changing world I don't want to be left behind either. I like the concept of lifelong learning and will be all the better for attempting this 2.0 Course so I'll stop being mentally lazy and give it my best shot.
